What Does a Private Investigator Actually Do?

Many people have an idea of private investigators based on what they see in television or movies. The reality is often very different. Professional investigations are rarely dramatic. Most of the work involves careful analysis of information, reviewing documentation and methodically establishing the facts.
Throughout my investigative career, both in law enforcement and in integrity roles, I have seen how important it is that investigations are conducted in a structured, impartial and evidence-based manner.
At its core, the role of an investigator is to gather reliable information and assess it objectively. This often involves reviewing documents, analysing financial information, examining communications and conducting interviews with individuals who may have knowledge of the matter.
Investigations may arise in a variety of situations, including:
Workplace misconduct matters
Corporate governance or compliance issues
Insurance related investigations
Private or civil disputes
Integrity matters within organisations or sporting bodies
Regardless of the subject matter, the objective of an investigation remains the same. It is about establishing the facts and ensuring that decisions are based on evidence rather than assumptions.
A structured investigation usually involves several stages. First, the allegation or concern must be clearly understood. From there, relevant information and documentation are gathered and reviewed. Interviews may then be conducted with individuals who can provide insight into the matter. Finally, the available evidence is carefully assessed before findings are documented in a clear and structured report.
Experience plays an important role in this process. Investigations often involve situations where information may be incomplete, inconsistent or disputed. Being able to identify relevant lines of enquiry and assess the reliability of evidence is critical to reaching fair and defensible conclusions.
Through my experience in complex investigations, I have learned that careful documentation, objectivity and attention to detail are essential to ensuring investigations are conducted properly.
