The Importance of Evidence in Investigations

Every investigation begins with a concern, allegation or complaint. However, allegations alone do not establish the facts. The foundation of any professional investigation is evidence.

Throughout my investigative career, I have seen situations where early assumptions were later proven incorrect once the available evidence was properly examined. This is why a structured and evidence-based approach is critical in any investigation.

Evidence can take many forms. It may include documents, financial records, electronic communications, witness accounts or other information that assists in understanding what occurred.

Common sources of evidence may include:

  • Organisational documents and records

  • Financial transactions and banking information

  • Emails, text messages or digital communications

  • Witness accounts from individuals involved in the matter

  • Photographs, video or other recorded information

Each piece of information must be carefully assessed to determine its relevance and reliability. Not all evidence carries the same weight, and part of an investigator's role is to evaluate whether the information is credible and supported by other available material.

In many investigations, a single piece of evidence rarely provides the full picture. Instead, investigators often rely on multiple sources of information to build an accurate understanding of events. When different pieces of evidence support each other, it strengthens the reliability of the findings.

A structured investigation process also separates different elements of the enquiry. It is important to clearly distinguish between the allegation, the evidence collected, observations drawn from that evidence and the findings that follow.

Maintaining this separation helps ensure that conclusions are based on facts rather than assumptions.

In my experience, careful documentation, attention to detail and objective analysis are essential to ensuring that investigations are fair, accurate and capable of withstanding scrutiny.
